How does mobile storage work in Fort Collins?

Container sizes and options

What sizes of storage containers do you offer?

Fort Collins Mobile Storage carries 10-foot, 20-foot, and 40-foot shipping containers for sale. We also rent containers in all three sizes, plus specialty configurations.

Here is a quick breakdown of what fits best:

  • 10-foot container: Good for small job sites, one-room storage, or tight driveways. About 570 cubic feet of space inside.
  • 20-foot container: The most popular size. Holds a 2- to 3-bedroom home worth of items. About 1,170 cubic feet.
  • 40-foot container: Doubles the 20-foot. Best for full-house moves, large commercial stock, or warehouse overflow. About 2,390 cubic feet.

We also carry 20-foot side open containers for wide loads and 40-foot double door containers for drive-through access. For dock-height loading, we rent 48-foot and 53-foot semi trailers.

Need a mobile workspace? We rent and sell 20-foot and 40-foot mobile offices too.

What is the difference between mobile storage and a self-storage unit?

A self-storage unit is a fixed room at a facility. You drive to it, unload your truck, and drive home. You make that trip every time you need something.

Mobile storage comes to you. We drop a container at your property, job site, or business. You load when it works for you. No truck rentals, no repeated drives across town.

Other differences:

  • Size range. Most self-storage units in Fort Collins top out around 10×20 feet (200 sq ft). A 40-foot shipping container gives you 320 sq ft of steel-walled space.
  • Build quality. Our containers are steel shipping containers built for ocean transport. They are water-tight, wind-tight, and pest-resistant. Indoor storage units vary.
  • Flexibility. You can keep a container on your property, move it to a new address, or store it at our facility. A self-storage unit stays where it is.
  • Buy option. You can buy a container and own it outright. You cannot buy a self-storage unit.

How long can I rent a mobile storage container?

As long as you need it. Fort Collins Mobile Storage offers both short-term and long-term leases. Some customers rent for a single month during a home remodel. Others keep a container on a job site or business property for years.

There is no maximum rental period. You are also not locked into a fixed-term contract. If your needs change, call us and we will adjust.

For permanent storage needs, buying a container may cost less than renting over 12 to 18 months. We can walk you through both options.

Property, permits, and security

Can I keep a storage container on my property in Fort Collins?

In most cases, yes. Many homeowners and business owners in Fort Collins keep containers on their property for storage, inventory, or equipment.

The City of Fort Collins does have zoning rules for accessory structures, and storage containers can fall under those rules. Factors include container size, placement setbacks from property lines, and how long you plan to keep it. If your property is within an HOA, the HOA may have its own restrictions.

Before placing a container, check with Fort Collins Building Services at (970) 416-2740 or visit fcgov.com/building for current requirements. Larimer County properties outside city limits may follow different rules.

We have delivered containers to residential and commercial properties across Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, and Greeley for over 40 years. If you have questions about your specific site, call us. We can share what has worked for other customers in your area.

Are your storage containers secure?

Yes. Fort Collins Mobile Storage carries steel shipping containers built for ocean freight. Every container has solid steel walls on all sides, heavy-duty swing doors, and built-in lock bars. You bring your own lock or buy one from us.

Cutting through steel walls takes serious tools and time. That stops most theft attempts before they start.

If you store your container at our facility, you get added protection. Our 12-acre storage yard at 311 N US Highway 287, Fort Collins, CO 80524 includes:

  • 6-foot solid fence
  • 3-strand security wire
  • 4-foot berm around the perimeter
  • Coded keypad gate
  • On-site manager 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Daylight access 7 days a week, no appointment needed

Common commercial uses include:
